Calculating Child Support Amounts
Our family law attorneys will walk you through the Texas Child Support Calculator, carefully explaining how it will affect you and your case.
In Texas, child support is statutory. It is based on the obligor's (the parent paying child support) ability to pay. As a general rule, the obligor will pay child support in the following amounts:
- 1 Child - 20% of Obligor's Net Resources
- 2 Children - 25% of Obligor's Net Resources
- 3 Children - 30% of Obligor's Net Resources
- 4 Children - 35% of Obligor's Net Resources
- 5 Children - 40% of Obligor's Net Resources
- 6+ Children - Not less than the amount for 5 children
The current guidelines for child support are specifically designed to apply to situations in which the obligor's monthly net resources are not greater than $7,500. For example, if the obligor's monthly net resources exceed $7,500, the obligor's child support will "cap out" at $1,500 per month for one child.
Paying for Health Insurance
Additionally, the parent paying child support is also required to pay for health insurance for the child as additional child support. In the event the obligee (the parent receiving support) bears the cost of the child's health insurance, child support maybe adjusted to reimburse the obligee for this additional expense.
